Austin Sees Record Heat

Breaking news in Austin – it’s still incredibly hot!  You probably figured that much out on your own, though.  But did you know we just broke a heat record that dates back to 1925?

Austin Sees Record Heat

This guy is unrelenting!

We have already had 71 days of triple-digit temperatures this year, which beats the previous record of 69.

The extreme heat coupled with the drought is putting a strain on Austin’s power supply so it would be helpful to the community for everyone to do their best to conserve energy.  The Statesman offered up a few tips to do just that.

  • Turn off unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronics.
  • Close blinds and drapes that get direct sun and use fans in occupied rooms.  Set thermostats to 78 or higher.
  • When away from home, set thermostats to 85 and turn off fans before you leave.
  • Use microwaves instead of electric ranges or ovens.

These are simple tips, but every little bit of energy savings will help us avoid brown outs.  And do be sure to be careful out in this heat!
